Get Back On Track After A Weekend Of Over Indulging

Summer is the best time for barbeques, family get togethers and holiday celebrations. These events can lead to over indulging since you are not paying attention to the cues your body is giving you when it is full. That can leave you not feeling the best. Whether it is over drinking or eating you can always get yourself back on track.

Registered dietician, Katie Dodd says "One day or weekend of overeating will not likely have negative effects on our health. It is more important to focus on the healthy habits we have before and after holiday celebrations. Get back to eating a healthy diet and moving your body. Don’t punish yourself for enjoying some extra foods because this can create an unhealthy relationship with foods and may lead you to binge or overeat these foods."

Don't wait to start making changes to your lifestyle. You can begin your journey any day of the week. You don't have to start on Monday to return to healthy living. Kristin Gillespie, RD and advisor for Exercisewithstyle.com says "It's important to resume healthy eating habits and exercise as soon as possible following the holiday to help you lose that holiday weight and just generally feel better."

Start keeping track of what you put into your body. Making a food log will hold you accountable for all the food you indulge in. You can do it the old fashioned way with pen and paper or download an app to help you monitor your eating habits.

Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Salt in your food can cause fluid retention and bloating. By increasing the amount of water you drink you can help flush out that excess salt. After a day of drinking it can also rehydrate your body.

Counter balance all of those pre-packaged snacks and comfort foods with fruit and veggies. Plant-based RD, Amy Gorin, recommends cutting up your fruits and vegetables and having them ready to grab in the fridge. She also says to keep a basket with fruit in it on your counter so you are tempted to grab a healthy snack. Nuts and cheese are also snacks that can benefit you by making you feel fuller longer.
