Guardians Hold Off Tigers In Extra Innings To Complete Sweep

The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, in ten innings, after Detroit tied the game at three with the bases loaded in the ninth. With this victory, the Guardians completed the second straight sweep over its division rivals since being swept in the previous trip to Detroit.

Enyel De Los Santos picked up the win after holding Detroit scoreless in the ninth when he entered with the bases loaded. Bryan Shaw earned the save after holding Detroit scoreless in the tenth. Gregory Soto took the loss after allowing the lone run in extra innings to score. Zach Plesac took a no-decision after pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, and striking out seven batters.

Andres Giminez scored two of the Guardians' three unearned runs (each during a Luke Maile at-bat) - first on a throwing error in the second inning, then after reaching second base safely on another throwing error. Then Steven Kwan belted his third home run in the fifth inning to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers scored the next three runs, starting with Javier Bias's solo home run in the sixth inning. After a few uneventful innings, the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth off of Trevor Stephan, starting with a Harold Castro walk and a Willi Castro single. Jonathan Schoop doubled to score Harold Castro, allowing Willi Castro to reach third. After intentionally walking Miguel Cabrera as a pinch hitter, the Guardians brought in Enyel De Los Santos to pitch. After Eric Haase drove in Willi Castro on a fielder's choice, De Los Santos ended the Tigers' walk-off threat by striking out Riley Greene.

In the tenth inning, Oscar Gonzalez delivered a two-out RBI single to score ghost-runner Jose Ramirez, who started at second base and scored an unearned run due to this season's extra-inning rules. In the bottom of the frame, Tigers' ghost-runner Riley Greene reached third on a Victor Reyes groundout, but Shaw struck out the final two hitters for the save.

The Guardians improve to 9-2 in extra-inning games, and to 59-52 overall, the first time being at least seven games over .500 this season. Cleveland will take a five-game winning streak north of the border against the Toronto Blue Jays (60-50), starting tomorrow at 7:07 PM. The Guardians won three of the four games in Cleveland when they hosted the first meeting in May.
