DETROIT, MI -- Cleveland starter Aaron Civale made his first return since being pulled from a game with an apparent wrist injury on July 13th. Civale went on to toss 4 full innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 total hits. The Guardians jumped out to a 3-run lead after the 2nd inning, and would not score again for the remainder of the game. Detroit's pitching retired the last 20 Guardians batters of the game, but the Tigers fell short by the final score of 3-2.
Steven Kwan jolted the Cleveland offense with a lead-off triple to begin the game and was brought home by an RBI single off of the bat of Jose Ramirez. After an 0-11 start at the plate since being called up, Will Benson roped his first career big league hit on a line drive RBI single to right field.
James Karinchak found himself between a rock and a hard place in the 8th inning. staring at the bases loaded in a one-run game. With two men out and the bases juiced, the highly energized Karinchak tossed a knee-buckling curve ball to catch Kerry Carpenter looking for strike three, as he walked back to the Guardians' dugout screaming and pointing toward the Detroit batter. Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase retired the first two batters of the ninth inning before Amed Rosario sailed a throw to first base to extend the inning for Detroit. Clase was not phased by the error, as he followed it up by forcing a chopper to first base to secure his 26th save of the season.
The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers will play the final game of the series on Thursday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1:10 pm ET at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
