Football, Soccer, Cross Country. These are just a few of the school sports activities that are now in full swing with Summer conditioning. Every year there are reports of healthy student athletes suffering from heat related illnesses with some being fatal. As coaches and trainers are constantly aware of the outside environments, more specifically the temperatures and the heat index, the health and well being of a student athlete is directly related to preparation. Health officials recommend that student athletes prepare for their workouts by drinking a bottle of water the night before practice and then another one about a half hour prior to practice. This will keep the athlete hydrated through work outs. Other warnings to watch for is if a student stops sweating or if he or she vomits. If you suspect that a student is suffering from a heat related illness, or exhibits chest pains; immediately call 911.
