(Cleveland) - The Regional Transit Authority is planning to build a new rapid station for Little Italy. It would replace the current Red Line stop at East 120th and Euclid Avenue, and would be constructed at East 119th and Mayfield Road.

Thursday is the deadline for bids, with construction due to start in the late fall or early spring. The RTA Board is expected to finalize the project in the next several weeks.

RTA spokeswoman Mary Shaffer says the entire project will cost $17.5 million. She tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that 80% of the project will be covered by a federal grant.

The new Red Line stop will be called the Little Italy-University Circle Rapid Station, and will connect riders to University Circle's museums, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, retail, and colleges.

The new station will be wrapped in stainless steel ribbons and illuminated from inside.
