(Cleveland) - Music legend Lou Reed is recovering after getting a kidney transplant at Cleveland Clinic last month.

The 70-year-old Reed tweeted: "I would like to thank the Cleveland Clinic and all of you around the world who have lifted me with prayer and wishes of love. Your support has buoyed me forever and I am deeply grateful. I am also really up and strong. Thanks to your spirit."

Reed's wife, musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson, spoke about his recent health troubles in an interview with the Times of London on Saturday, saying, "It's as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don't get it for fun."

A post on Reed's Facebook from Anderson clarified the statement, "When I was speaking recently with a journalist from the London Times I said, 'I don't think Lou will ever fully recover.' We were not talking about his physical condition. Lou is in the best physical shape in years - strong and energetic. He has a wonderful new life now and can do anything he wants. We were talking about how a traumatic event - a surgery or a calamity - can change your life. These things make you reevaluate everything in your life. And while they mark you forever, these traumas can be extremely positive. And I think for Lou this is especially true. He gets a chance to see things with enormous perspective. We couldn't be happier at the way this turned out."

Reed seems to agree, saying on Facebook, "I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry. I am bigger and stronger than stronger than ever. My Chen Taiji and health regimen has served me well all of these years, thanks to Master Ren Guang-yi. I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future.

Anderson told the times that Reed had the surgery at the Cleveland Clinic instead of his New York hometown because of the "dysfunctional" state of hospitals in New York.
